Stool
Design Goals: The goal for this simple furniture project was to combine the understanding of dynamic forms, structural foundations, simple joinery and the human to create one cohesive stool. In addition I wanted to explore and try new techniques in the design process to hopefully grow my skills as a designer.
Skills Learned: Gestural Sketching, Design Visualization, Keyshot Post-processing, Woodworking, Human Interaction,

Allowing play into the design process
Allowing play into the design process
Getting into a state of play well designing is critical to create new and unique objects. In this project I wanted to explore and not be worried to fail when.

Quick general proportion sketch
Using a quick sketch I was able to determine the general
proportions of the stool before moving into the refinement
stages in Illustrator and CAD.

Seat component construction
Collaborating with University of Cincinnati DAAP's facilities I was able to discuss the best way for creating the complex seat component. Utilizing 3D printed guides to house the bushings I was able to stop the cnc to drill the holes for the tenons.

Refining orthographic drawings
Illustrator allowed for quick iterations when refining the design direction. In this stage I began fine tuning the proportions of the stool to create a dynamic stance to the piece. I also began making sure the components would be structurally sound.

Turning identical legs and stretchers
Using calipers I laid out the depth needed to cut every 10 inches using a parting tool. after having a guide I than went back and used a roughing gauge to create a smooth taper transition. Finally refining each leg and stretcher using sandpaper.

Final CNC seat component

Final CNC seat component
By utilizing a cnc it allowed for consistency in each part made if put into a larger production. I needed to clean up and blend away the tabs connecting the form to the base material.
Design can be surprising. While this stool was an exploration of form and fundamental furniture techniques, the most insightful moments came after it was finished. Almost everyone who saw it instinctively tried to sit on it backwards. What started as an unexpected response became a valuable observation about how users interpret and engage with new designs.

Component Breakdown
This simple stool design is composed of four distinct components, all made from the same piece of wood: the CNC-machined seat, front stretcher, back stretcher, and legs with integrated wedged through tenons.

Finding the right place to document
Finding the right place to document
Finding the right place to document the stool was important to me. By reaching out and connecting with others I was able to not only able to find a fun cafe to shoot my stool in but also discuss and connect with other furniture makers that happened to be there as well.
Special thanks to Luke for modeling!
